Okereke Previews Giants vs. Seahawks

The New York Giants will face the best offense of their young season on Sunday when they travel to play the Seattle Seahawks.

They’ll hope to slow down an electric offense with quarterback Geno Smith playing the best football of his career. What makes that more difficult for New York, though, is the emergence of Seattle’s ground game.

Running back Kenneth Walker and the Seahawks scampered for 133 yards in their Week 4 loss. But the back is coming off perhaps the best game of his career – 116 total yards and three scores – and will be a problem for a vulnerable Giants defense.

Linebacker Bobby Okereke spoke about that challenge on Thursday.

“They’re a complete offense,” Okereke said. “They can run the ball really well. They can pass the ball well. They have a lot of strengths. So, it’ll be a great challenge for us.”

Walker has only played in two games this season – he dealt with an oblique injury – but has already logged 183 rushing yards and four scores. He’s a dual-threat runner who’s big-play ability complements Smith and the dynamic passing offense he commandeers.

“Explosive offense,” he said. “Like I said, a little bit of a dual headed monster. They can run the ball really well and they can throw the ball really well as well. Great quarterback, playing at a very high level, and they have three elite receivers, so a good challenge.”

New York has dealt with injuries and inconsistencies in the defensive backfield. But the front seven has seen its struggles, too, particularly against the run. Through September, the Giants defense ranks 28th in expected points added per rush and 27th in rushing success rate.

It’s easy to imagine Seattle taking advantage of that kind of mismatch.
“He’s a very physical runner,” Okereke said. “He’s got really good vision. He’s fast. He’s quick. He’s got elite contact balance. He forces a lot of missed tackles, so he’ll be a great challenge.”
Between Okereke, defensive tackle v, and a host of competent bodies, New York has ample talent – especially against a mediocre offensive line. The Giants’ execution on Sunday will be paramount in rendering the Seahawks offense one-dimensional and giving the unit a chance to keep pace.
