The coach was able to maintain Sunderland’s unblemished home record because of a very familiar face.
The Wearsiders may have lost their perfect start at the Stadium of Light, but Sunderland at least kept Leeds United at bay as they kept the three-point lead between the two promotion-chasers despite an error by the manager’s former FC Lorient reserve Illan Meslier that would have made Massimo Taibi shudder.
With 97 minutes remaining, Meslier made a horrifying error that has to be seen to be believed. In actuality, neither the photographs nor the words can truly do it justice.
Even after multiple tries, it is nearly impossible to figure out what on earth went wrong. Or, more accurately, what Meslier was trying to accomplish all along.

Regis Le Bris admits that he erred during the Sunderland vs. Leeds United match.
“We started very well and in possession. We were able to create many imbalances (for Leeds) and many chances to score. Then, after, I think we struggled out of possession,” Le Bris told reporters at full-time.
“We decided to play with a 5-4-1 shape and I think this was the wrong choice. It was difficult to defend our box and apply pressure.”
