Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris admits he made a mistake vs Leeds as Black Cats ‘struggled’

When your lucks in, your lucks in. And Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris certainly thought that he got away with a bit of a tactical mishap as the Black Cats claimed a bizarre draw with Leeds United on Friday night.

The coach could thank a familiar face for Sunderland’s unbeaten home record.
The Wearsiders may have lost their perfect start at the Stadium of Light, but thanks to a blunder by the manager’s former FC Lorient reserve Illan Meslier that would make even Massimo Taibi wince, Sunderland kept Leeds United at bay, maintaining a three-point lead over the two promotion contenders.

Meslier’s terrible mistake, which occurred with 97 minutes remaining, must be seen to be believed. Words do not do it justice, and neither do images.

Even after several repetitions, it is nearly hard to figure out what exactly happened. Or, what Meslier was trying to accomplish in the first place.

Regis Le Bris found himself beholden not just to his one-time shot-stopper, but also to the tactical acumen of a Sunderland squad that rebounded well following a period in which Leeds were poised to capitalize on their advantage.

Regis Le Bris says he made a mistake in Sunderland vs Leeds United clash

“We got off to a strong start and maintained possession. We were able to create numerous imbalances (for Leeds) as well as scoring opportunities. Then, I believe we battled out of possession,” Le Bris told reporters at full-time.

“We chose to play in a 5-4-1 formation, and I believe that was the wrong decision. It was challenging to defend our box while applying pressure.”
