Sean Dyche makes ‘reading between the lines’ Everton job admission amid Friedkin takeover claim

Sean Dyche admits to’reading between the lines’ about his Everton employment amid a Friedkin takeover rumor.

Sean Dyche Everton Dan Friedkin

Sean Dyche acknowledges he was hired at Everton to deal with the unpleasant realities of the situation, not “dreams” of future success.

On October 5, the Toffees manager told Sky Sports that he understood why he was handed the position during a tough time. He also stated that the situation at Goodison Park was worse than he had anticipated.

Dyche stated: “I don’t believe it’s about dreams; dreams are for another time. I was brought in here for realism.

“They didn’t tell me in words, but by reading between the lines, I was drawn in by the realism of the issue and its continual nature.

“When I look back, it was certainly far worse than I expected, but I believe I was brought in here to face reality. Dreams are for another day, but at this point, they are still a reality.

“During anyone’s time at a football club, the goal is to leave their mark. We don’t know what’s going to happen next; if The Friedkin Group comes in, that may change things, but we won’t know until it all occurs, so we’ll have to wait and watch.”

Sean Dyche replaced Frank Lampard to save Everton from relegation.

Dyche faced criticism for his approach this season, with only one Premier League win in six games. Potential candidates include David Moyes (Richard Keys, August 26) and Carlos Corberan (Chris Lepkowski, September 22).

But by doing so, he is effectively acknowledging that crisis management is his level, which is why Farhad Moshiri approached him after Frank Lampard was fired in January 2023.

To be fair to the former Burnley manager, he has done the job for which he was hired, keeping Everton up on the penultimate day of the season and then pulling comfortably away last season despite two point deductions.

Everton Farhad Moshiri

Everton main shareholder Farhad Moshiri replaced Frank Lampard with Sean Dyche.

In the future, the work Dyche has done on Merseyside in recent years may be seen more favorably after a buyout is finalized, given the financial upheaval and concerns about the club’s future if they fall out of the top flight.

But his somber tactics and, at times, perplexing team selections and replacements are fine when he is securing Everton’s future, but when he isn’t, it’s no wonder that supporters are unhappy.

The threat of a 777 takeover last season did little to improve the spirits, but now that Dan Friedkin has returned to arrange a buyout of Moshiri, it appears to be the beginning of the end for Dyche, whose contract expires at the end of the season.
