Scales eyes clean-sheet record as Celtic bid to shake off European loss

Celtic are striving for their sixth consecutive league clean sheet.

Liam Scales has clean-sheet records in mind as Celtic look to rebound from their European setback in Dingwall.

Scales and his team-mates were on the end of a 7-1 thumping against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday, bringing them back down to earth after an excellent start to the season.

The champions have scored 20 goals without reply in six William Hill Premiership games, tying a club record.

It has been 118 years since Celtic began a league season with six consecutive clean sheets, and extending that streak against Ross County on Sunday would mirror Steven Gerrard’s Rangers squad of 2020-21, which began the season with a Scottish top-flight record seven shutouts.

Scales uses a statistic as motivation.

The Republic of Ireland international stated, “We know that if we can build a strong foundation and keep a clean sheet, we’ll more than likely score goals, which will win us games given our offensive ability.

“So it does give us something else to aim for, to keep going on this run and go as long as we can really.”

The centre-back is certain they will recover swiftly from their bad night in the Champions League.

“It’s in the past now and we’ve sort of moved on with an important game coming up at the weekend and we know that if we get results in the rest of our games in the Champions League, we have a chance of qualifying,” according to him.

“It was a difficult decision, but we don’t dwell on it anymore; we’ve gone on.

“We just do what we normally do. We have our meetings and our analysis. Nothing changed. It doesn’t change when we win big, or when we lose.

“We just do what we do and move on; we are always focused on the next game.

“Obviously, you have the day following the game, which is not ideal. But we’ve begun the season so well in the league; we’re unbeaten, and we’re doing everything correctly domestically.

“So it’s simple to forget about what occurred and focus on this game because I certainly want to continue to be a part of a defence that keeps clean sheets and wins. Let’s see how long we can go on this run.
