Mikey Lewis shows human side again after Hull KR ‘create something spectacular’

Hull KR’s Lewis gave an emotional interview that showed why May wants to ‘look after’ his team-mate

Hull Kingston Rovers half-back Mikey Lewis revealed his human side again after reaching the Grand Final, in an interview that reminded him of the pleasure he felt while representing England, and it underscored the Hull-born player’s love for the club.

Tyrone May, Lewis’ half-back partner, had given an intriguing interview in the build-up to the semi-final win over Warrington Wolves, in which May stated, “I wanted to strangle him when we played him, and I think a lot of clubs do feel that way, but when you play alongside him, he’s pretty electric, he’s just someone you want to put your arm around and look after.”
And, despite being a figure who can enrage opposition supporters with his antics, Lewis opened up in an emotional chat with Sky Sports.
When asked about his club, fans, and teammates, Lewis responded, “I love them all. When I was 16, I joined this group, which was in disarray at the time, and it has since improved. It’s a compliment to everyone who worked behind the scenes to get it where it is now. I adore this crew. This year’s creations have been outstanding. We haven’t completed yet. We have one more game. It wasn’t our best performance, but this is rugby league, right?

“I cannot wait. I’m simply going to soak it all in, the entire week. As children, we dream about achieving specific goals. I am not going to go there just to participate. We’re going there to win. We just need to play better, but that’s okay.

“Willie (Peters, the head coach) holds us all accountable. He continues to drive us. It’s been a long year with hurting bodies. However, we are really proud of our squad’s tenacity and determination. And it isn’t just Willie. There are several assistant coaches, including Danny Ward, Frogga (Brett Delaney), and Hodgy (David Hodgson). Every strength and conditioning coach is doing their part to keep us fit and healthy. We are all together as a group, and we will go there and have fun next week.”
