Chris Davies sends a clear message to his Birmingham City players after Charlton setback.

Chris Davies was commenting following Birmingham City’s defeat at Charlton Athletic in League One.

Chris Davies hopes to use Birmingham City’s first League One defeat of the season as a wake-up call.

Charlton Athletic defeated Blues 1-0 at The Valley, with Matty Godden scoring in the 54th minute to end their perfect season.

“I thought we weren’t at our normal level,” Davies remarked. “Throughout the game, we lacked our usual enthusiasm, zip, and fluency. The three games in eight days definitely took a toll on us, and we suffered, but Charlton did as well, so it’s no excuse. We had some control over possession, but we never used it to create major opportunities or dangerous circumstances.

“It was a bouncing ball from a long throw, with a soft goal. You can’t let the ball bounce, and you can’t let the opponent swivel and volley it in.”

Blues have two weeks to reflect before their next League One encounter, which comes after the international break. The team will meet Shrewsbury Town in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy on Tuesday, assuming their wounds have healed.

Davies added: “From my perspective, as I told the players, they’ve had a great start with what they’ve accomplished, but as I’ve said before the beginning, this is a very difficult league, and if you think you’re better than League One, it can be a real challenge.

“I’m not suggesting they do, but the challenge we have is that we’ll have to deal with difficult situations like this. We need to think on this and make things right.”
