Maeda’s ability to press is ‘one of the best’ in modern football

Stiliyan Petrov praises Celtic forward Daizen Maeda as “one of the best” he has seen in football.

Despite a 7-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund on Matchday Two of the UEFA Champions League, Brendan Rodgers’ team remains a formidable force domestically, leading the Scottish Premiership after six games without losing a single point or conceding a goal.

The 5-1 European success against Slovan Bratislava two weeks ago suggests that the thumping in Dortmund on Tuesday may be a minor Euro glitch, or as midfielder Arne Engels put it, “a bad day at the office.”

Maeda scored Celtic’s only goal at Signal Iduna Park, bringing his total to six for the season.

Petrov, who played 220 games for the Hoops over a seven-year period, believes Maeda and fellow countryman Yogo Furuhashi would fit in well at his former club Aston Villa.

Villa qualified for the Champions League this season under Unai Emery and achieved a historic victory over Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

Despite this, Petrov believes Celtic’s Japanese duo have the skills to adapt into Villa’s squad.

“There’s not one, there’s quite a few,” said the Bulgarian legend to Gambling.com this week.

“Listen, Celtic are now performing exceptionally well, but I would want to see at least two players, Maeda or Kyogo.

“I believe they would complement any squad. Maeda’s pace, energy, and ability to push fullbacks and press are amazing. Probably one of the best I’ve ever seen in football.

“And Kyogo is just a classy player, a great striker with so much ability, really clever and the main thing is he score goals.”
