Liam Shaw ends Celtic nightmare as forgotten midfielder lands new club

The ex-Sheffield Wednesday teenager has ripped up his contract and returned south.

Liam Shaw has made a permanent move to Fleetwood Town, ending his Celtic nightmare.

The unsung midfielder joined the Hoops from Sheffield Wednesday in what was widely seen as a significant coup for the Parkhead club. Shaw had broken into the Owls’ first team and made an immediate impact as a teenager before being tempted north by Celts. Despite his versatility, the midfielder was not a priority for either Ange Postecoglou or Brendan Rodgers, leading to three loan spells at Motherwell, Morecambe, and Wigan Athletic.

The 23-year-old made only two Celtic appearances, totalling 74 minutes of action. Now, he’s negotiated a departure from Glasgow by terminating the final year of his contract and joining ex-Rangers midfielder Charlie Adam at the Cod Army.

A club release read: “Fleetwood Town is pleased to announce the acquisition of midfielder Liam Shaw on a permanent contract until the summer of 2025. The six-foot-four central midfielder has joined Charlie Adam’s team on the Fylde Coast after leaving Scottish Premiership club Celtic for the remainder of the season.

“The midfielder will now wear the number 26 for the 2024/25 season – he will be eligible to face Bromley at Highbury Stadium on Saturday in the 12:30pm kick-off.”
