Kris Boyd laughs through his Rangers pain before Celtic potshot gets him booed – what the pundits said

Boyd could only laugh after Lyon’s second goal, and after full time, he blamed the eventual defeat on rivals Celtic.

Kris Boyd was uncomfortably chuckling after Lyon’s second goal against Rangers, but he remained smiling at full-time, turning their 4-1 defeat into a dig at Celtic.

Rangers were soundly defeated by the Ligue 1 side at Ibrox, with Malick Fofana and Alexandre Lacazette each scoring twice on their route to a comfortable victory. Tom Lawrence had cancelled out Lacazette’s opening goal, but the visitors’ forward trio of Fofana, Lacazette, and Rayan Cherki was simply too potent.

The experts had a lot to say on a sombre night, with Boyd standing out in the Sky Sports booth. He can never resist a Celtic wind up and was eager to compare it to their 7-1 win at Dortmund. Meanwhile, Ally McCoist identified a sign that the’standards’ at Ibrox are declining. Here’s what three pundits said.

Kris Boyd

After Lyon’s second goal, the Sky studio cut to Boyd, who laughed and remarked, “You don’t need to come back to me if you don’t want to!” Before mentioning Lyon’s second goal.

He went on full-time, crediting Hearts before taking aim at the Hoops across the city. He added: “Cerny had an opportunity before Lyon scored to put Rangers up right away, but he wasted it from within the six-yard box, smashing it over the bar. Lyon dominated from that point forward. This evening, the front three ripped Rangers apart.

“To be honest, it was only four, but it could have been much more. Lyon was great. What about this week? You have to give Hearts credit, as they are the only Scottish team to win in Europe. Fantastic performance. But it’s hard to believe Rangers lost 4-1 tonight, and it’s far from the worst outcome for a Scottish club in Europe this week.” The remainder of the studio, who knew what was coming, booed and groaned as that lost comment was spoken.

Speaking during the second half of TNT’s telecast, McCoist believes the standards have slipped considerably since the days of Gio van Bronckhorst, when Rangers could compete with some of Europe’s greatest. In his assessment, he stated, “There has obviously been a decrease in standards. They could have competed against these teams three or four years ago. So you have to question, “What went wrong?”

And at the end, he observed, “Rangers were comfortably beaten by genius. And those two (Lacazette and Fofana) were part of a trio that I must admit, I thoroughly loved watching. Fofana on the left, Lacazette in the middle, and Cherki to the right. They possessed a stunning equilibrium. Rangers couldn’t handle it, simply put.”

Derek McInnes

And Kilmarnock manager McInnes believes Rangers had a promising start before things went wrong. He said, “The Rangers got off to a great start. Cerny’s missed stick-on at the back post will leave him dissatisfied. However, after the front three had established themselves, Rangers struggled. The fourth goal knocks any hope out of the Rangers players. Then it’s only a matter of clocking out the minutes. Clement made a few adjustments, possibly with Sunday in mind, because he felt it was beyond them. The quality made the big difference in the forward zones.”
