Why Leeds United favourites tag is ‘unfair’ as Daniel Farke gives Sunderland verdict

The Whites manager does not want to put too much pressure on his team.

Daniel Farke believes it is ‘unfair’ to designate his young Leeds United side as favourites to win promotion following another turbulent summer at Elland Road.

This summer, the club suffered numerous big-name exits. However, Farke was able to bring in eight new faces to the squad and welcome back Brenden Aaronson and Max Wober from loan spells. Leeds United’s response to losing key players like Crysencio Summerville, Archie Grey, and Georginio Rutter has been positive, according to manager Farke.

Farke has downplayed his team’s status as favourites, despite having experienced players from Burnley, West Bromwich Albion, Sheffield United, and Middlesbrough. However, he remains optimistic about their chances of success.

“After so many changes and all the players we have had go and come in, we have an exciting group,” according to him. “But when you have such a young bunch together, it would be unjust to place the responsibility of being the major favourite on them.

“We have a good bunch, and I believe that we can be right in the mix, but it is wrong to identify us as major favourites.

“This season, I’d say we’ve gone unbeaten in road games, with eight points and two quite different wins. Two difficult opponents left with draws. It’s almost flawless and a really fantastic result. Our home game performances have been quite good.”

Leeds will put their credentials to the test on Friday night when they travel to Wearside to face league leaders Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Regis Le Bris’ Black Cats have shocked many, and Farke is impressed with their progress thus far.

“They have done really well so far,” Farke said of Sunderland.”You need to win as many points as possible, and they have done so. They have great shape, skilled players, and are effective on the counterattack.

“They are an extremely dangerous side. I respect their work, but we also know we’re in good health. We have to do our best to give ourselves a chance. When not all of the major players are available, unity and cooperation are essential.”

Leeds are unlikely to see any of their injured players return for the Stadium of Light fixture, with Ilia Gruev adding to the list of absentees after suffering a knee injury at Norwich.
