The Dallas Cowboys have a strong familiarity with Cleveland Browns’ top receiver Amari Cooper. The receiver is now being considered as a potential trade candidate. Could the Cowboys be interested in reuniting with Cooper?
The franchise did not conclude things on good terms with Cooper, but Dallas requires assistance across the board.Clarence Hill Jr. of All City DLLS suggested that the Cowboys might acquire Cooper in exchange for a potential fifth-round pick.
“If the Cowboys are still in the race, they need to flip a fifth-round pick for Cooper,” Hill stated in a September 21, 2024 message on X.
Cooper is currently in the final season of a five-year, $100 million contract he signed with Dallas. The five-time Pro Bowler was set to have a $8.7 million cap charge this season. According to Spotrac, the Browns made a structural modification to his deal, making him more tradeable.
“The Browns converted all but $1.21 million of WR Amari Cooper’s 2024 salary into a signing bonus, making him an exceedingly affordable trade target. On September 30, Spotrac reported a current price of $941,111 with a deadline of $605,000.
Can Amari Cooper Still Help the Cowboys?
There is a reason why Cooper gets referenced in trade rumours. Cooper’s output has not been as high this season as it was during his previous Pro Bowl campaigns.
Cooper has 16 receptions for 148 yards and two scores throughout the first four games. Cooper had 35 or less receiving yards in three of these four games, but Cleveland’s offence is not exactly firing on all cylinders.
Cooper was just named to the Pro Bowl in 2023 after catching 72 passes for 1,250 yards and five touchdowns in 15 starts. It’s hard to imagine Cooper suddenly lost his status as a great receiver this offseason.
In 2022, the Cowboys traded Cooper to the Browns for a fifth-round pick instead of a sixth-rounder. Sending a fifth-round pick to Cleveland would cost Dallas more than it would receive in 2022.
The Cowboys Have Glaring Holes at Multiple Positions
The Cowboys roster has many weaknesses, and there is a compelling argument that Dallas has more pressing needs than receivers. Specifically, the defensive line has unable to generate consistent pressure to halt the run.
The Cowboys’ unit will be much weaker with DeMarcus Lawrence and Micah Parsons absent with injury. Cooper’s availability, however, would help to meet a need, albeit not the most pressing one.
The Cowboys have failed to find output at wideout except CeeDee Lamb.Brandin Cooks’ injury has increased strain on the position group.According to K.D. Drummond of USA Today, the Cowboys should consider pursuing Cooper again.
“Cooper made waves this summer, threatening a holdout and got the final year of his contract (originally written by the Cowboys) guaranteed,” Drummond reported on September 28, with the headline: “Amari Cooper headlines 5 AFC North trade targets Cowboys must ask about before NFL deadline.” “But if the Browns continue to struggle, maybe the Cleveland front staff will bite the bullet and send him back down south.
“Cooper had a career high in yards in 2024, 1,250, and would make a great compliment to Lamb; they’ve proven what they could be as a duo already.”
