The acquisition of James Maddison from Coventry City in 2016 by Norwich City was an ultimate masterstroke that has to rank among the team’s best commercial deals in recent memory.

In January 2016, Maddison moved to Carrow Road after Norwich and the Sky Blues agreed to a £2.5 million price. The transfer saw the creative midfielder—who was allegedly being watched by many Premier League teams—return to Coventry for the balance of the 2015–16 season on loan.

Before heading back south of the border, the 19-year-old was quickly moved on loan to Aberdeen for the first part of the next season, when he returned with two goals and three assists from 17 games.

After spending his time on the sidelines with Aberdeen on loan, Maddison made his league debut for Norwich in April 2017 with his first goal in a 3-1 victory over Preston North End.. But when Daniel Farke joined the Canaries that summer, everything was different.

After an incredible 2017–18 season, he earned a move to Leicester City for an estimated £22 million.

Before leaving for Tottenham Hotspur last summer in a £40 million transfer after the Foxes were relegated from the Premier League, Maddison scored more than 50 goals during a remarkable five-year tenure. He has also been a key player for Ange Postecogolou’s team.

The England international’s career success has validated Norwich’s initial decision to buy him, making their £2.5 million expenditure appear extremely reasonable. It was undoubtedly an inspired commercial decision.

Before the 2017–18 season, Maddison clearly felt as though he had something to prove, and with good reason.

For the preceding 18 months, he had to wait for opportunities at Norwich, but he was one of several young players who Farke had shown a great deal of faith and trust in, including Jamal Lewis and Max Aarons.

It would be an understatement to suggest that Maddison merely returned that faith. The playmaker was Norwich’s standout performer of the year, winning the team’s Player of the Season title with 15 goals and 11 assists in all competitions.

With the exception of one, all of those strikes occurred in the Championship, where Maddison established himself as one of the most remarkable players in the division.

When he made the decision the following summer to join the Premier League, it came as very little surprise as it brought Norwich enormous profits.

Maddison met all the requirements for a good signing: he was cheaply acquired, flourished at the team, contributed significantly to the first team, and eventually generated a sizable profit.

But, Norwich has recently signed some other players who might be even better business — which, it must be noted, takes some doing. Although Maddison’s influence was evident and he was unquestionably an excellent purchase, Norwich’s astute recruitment strategy is evident in the better players they have acquired.

Teemu Pukki may be the pick of the bunch, even if Norwich did not make any profit from his services.

The frontman for Finland arrived on a free transfer in the summer of 2018, amassed 88 goals from fewer than 200 games to rank fourth all-time in the club’s scoring record, claimed two Championship championships, and then left for no reason at all.

At that time, there was no profit on resale, but the impact was enormous.

However, Ben Godfrey outperforms Maddison by that measure. In the same transfer window as Maddison’s arrival, the central defender was signed from York City for a meager £150,000. He played in Norfolk for almost 70 games before finalizing a 25 million-pound move to Everton four years later.

While Godfrey is currently with the reigning UEFA Europa League champions Atalanta, Maddison is enjoying a better career; however, Godfrey was signed for even less money and sold for even more. It was remarkable to receive £25 million for Godfrey in the first place, and Norwich has repeatedly demonstrated their ability to spot, nurture, and command high fees for talent.
