Bayern Munich director disagrees with Unai Emery over Jhon Duran goal

Latest Aston Villa news from BirminghamLive: Bayern Munich board member Max Eberl reacts to Champions League defeat at Villa Park.

Bayern Munich board member Max Eberl believes Jhon Duran’s winning goal for Aston Villa in the Champions League was not a big chance, despite Unai Emery’s statement that it was part of his team’s plan to surprise Manuel Neuer.

Emery’s plan to exploit Neuer’s tendency to be off his goal-line during open play was achieved flawlessly by Duran, who raced onto a pass from Pau Torres and lobbed the Bayern custodian to score the winning goal.

However, Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, downplayed it after the game, saying, “The goal we conceded was hardly a big chance.”

Speaking more broadly about the German team’s performance, he added: “In the first half, we had a lot of control for around 15 or 20 minutes but couldn’t drive them back much. We weren’t really focused today since we didn’t have possession.

“The game was on a knife edge from the start. We performed better in the second half, but did not create many opportunities to score goals. We were more active.

“After falling down, we responded and had two more opportunities via Serge (Gnabry) and Harry (Kane). You should not lose these games.

“We must learn from this that we cannot win at this level unless we give our all. We failed to take advantage of the limited opportunities that presented themselves. We realised there were enormous risks here.”
