World media reacts as Celtic take a ‘big slap’ from Dortmund ‘steamroller’ while Brendan Rodgers question goes global

Brendan Rodgers finds himself under the European microscope following another high-level leathering.

The Celtic team aimed to compete at the highest level in Europe.

The Dortmund team was not expected to reach the heights of last season’s Champions League Final, where they fell to Real Madrid. Brendan Rodgers’ plan was thwarted, leaving the Premiership winners 5-1 down before the half-time break.

The excitement of Daizen Maeda’s fast equaliser was quickly dispelled as a typical story against the big guns away from home in this competition unfolded. There would be no mercy from Nuri Sahin’s team. The Turk accused Rodgers of ‘wrecking’ his Liverpool loan spell during his playing days, and he exacted a horrific payback in front of a Yellow Wall hungry for more goals as BVB refused to let up.

Bild (Germany).

Bild, a German newspaper, couldn’t ignore the “small shadow” cast by injured hat-trick hero Karim Adeyemi. They said: “Borussia Dortmund celebrates a goal feast, rolling past Celtic Glasgow 7:1 in front of 81,365 spectators at the sold-out Signal Iduna Park. The home team played like one unit, particularly in the opening half. The blemish of the interim equaliser changed nothing, and it left the Black and Yellows unimpressed.

Borussia Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi celebrates after scoring

For 45 minutes, Nuri Sahin’s players remained greedy, stepping on the pedal and demanding more. Karim Adeyemi, in particular, was unstoppable for the defeated Scots. The fact that the three-goal scorer had to leave the pitch with an injury just after halftime created a slight shade. Of course, following the break, BVB did not maintain the same level of intensity. Nonetheless, the Bundesliga club always had everything under control, and they were able to score two additional goals. Thanks to this massive win, Borussia is at least top of the standings till tomorrow.”

Kicker (German)

Rival publication Kicker praised Celtic’s record heading into this game: “A memorable evening in Dortmund comes to an end: BVB rolls over the Scottish champions, who had not lost a game since April.” Dortmund’s star and sad figure is clearly Adeyemi, who scored three goals in the first half before leaving injured. BVB slowed down significantly in the second half but still managed to score twice more.

Aachener Zeitung (Germany)

According to Aachener Zeitung, it was a night to rival last season’s Champions League heroics: “Last season, BVB celebrated wonderful Champions League evenings against Paris Saint-Germain, Atlético Madrid, and PSV Eindhoven on the path to the final. The home opener for the new Champions League season proceeded with full-throttle football. Six goals in the first half, together with an exuberant BVB led by an exceptional Adeyemi, pushed the crowd to their feet.

“The last time BVB scored five goals in the first half was on November 22, 2016, when they defeated Legia Warsaw 8:4 in the Champions League. The Champions League finalists received a standing ovation. But questions must be raised about coach Rodgers. He didn’t change in the second half as BVB cruised through.

Marca (Spain).

Marca recognised how little Celtic could do: “The German team trampled over a Scottish squad that could do nothing to stop the onslaught of the home team, which was a steamroller. Borussia Dortmund, which hit Celtic hard, were unable to resist the continuous aggressive attacks unleashed by a Bavarian squad.”

L’Equipe (France)

In France, the captured the full impact of what Celtic were smacked with perfectly: “Led by an exceptional Adeyemi (3 goals and a penalty gained) in the first quarter, Dortmund swept aside a Celtic team that was too tender and punished for its multiple errors on the restart. Borussia is so full after two matches, but Celtic receives a heavy slap.”
