Ianis Hagi makes financial sacrifice to Rangers after players, board pressure Philippe Clement.

According to the Daily Record, Ianis Hagi has decided to waive a contract condition that would have provided him with higher money in exchange for a return to the Rangers first team.

On October 1, the Romanian was restored to the main squad and agreed to forego a wage increase after a set number of games to resolve a stand-off that had placed him in the B Team.

On August 13, The Record stated that he was set to receive a £6,000 weekly salary boost from the trigger that led to his exclusion from the first-team under Philippe Clement.

However, it has been revealed that top players and board members put pressure on the Belgian to bring him back in.

Hagi had backing from influential members of the dressing room and top figures at Ibrox, resulting in a successful change in the manager’s mind.

It is difficult to determine who was ultimately responsible for the peculiar situation during the last four months, but the fact that it has been settled bodes well for the Light Blues.

If the 41-cap international was relegated to the reserves despite a strong performance at Euro 2024 and a lack of alternatives, the Belgian’s judgment must be called into doubt.

Despite the fact that Hagi is a stronger player, the manager chose to give Scott Wright many starts early this season. Wright was then moved to Birmingham City.

Hagi has never played for Clement because he was on loan at Alaves when Michael Beale was fired last season, so it appears way too convenient for him not to even consider Hagi, who has 99 appearances for the Gers, during preseason without outside influence.

Clement publicly stated that Hagi could not return [Daily Mail, 31 August], but then revealed on September 13 that his decision was not fully his own.

But, even if there was financial pressure to keep the former Genk player out, it seems unusual that a guy who could actually help on the pitch should be absolutely barred from the senior squad.

Rangers have undoubtedly spent more money on less important players in recent seasons, and if the entire situation was simply a ruse to force Hagi into sacrificing a clause in his contract, it begs the question of why he was given it in the first place, as well as what freedom Clement has to manage his team.

After rejecting exit options [Sky Sports, 26 August], Hagi prioritized fighting for his place at Ibrox [Football Scotland, 19 August], and demonstrated a willingness to compromise [Instagram, 27 August], he now appears to be in a good position. If he can prove an asset on the pitch, he will look even better.

The manager and those above him, who John Gilligan admits have been hiding behind Clement as the figurehead at Ibrox [Sky Sports Scotland, 24 September], are not portrayed in a positive light.
