Seven goals in a crushing defeat, an analysis of Celtic’s Champions League problems
Celtic now has three points from two games, but this humbling result, along with their earlier 5-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava, means that Brendan Rodgers’ team is right where they should be right now.

The thousands of Celtic supporters who came out last night could face much more humiliation if Celtic adopts the same strategies. Paul Lambert, who played with distinction for both Dortmund and Celtic, provided an insightful analysis of the reason behind Celtic’s problems at the Westfalenstadion earlier today on talkSPORT.
“That’s exactly what can happen in that stadium, even though I never mentioned that yesterday. To handle that atmosphere, you have to be a really big player. The Champions League champion Lambert stated, “That’s exactly what can happen if you don’t handle that.” Lambert played for Dortmund.
Celtic is receiving criticism. “It’s important to keep things in perspective, even though I believe Celtic will face criticism.” Lambert thinks that a major factor in the result was the stark disparity in wealth between his two previous clubs and the current state of Scottish football. However, that leaves out the discussion of the tactical strategy, which seemed to be the main source of Celtic’s issues.
“Celtic aren’t playing a St Johnstone, Hibs, or Hearts,” Lambert went on. Although five of the eleven players on the side you’re playing for were in the Champions League final the previous year.
Rangers right now are a complete mess. There’s a misconception among Scottish football, in my opinion, that we have some excellent sides, but we don’t. The level has vanished from the scene. “Martin O’Neill had a fantastic year when I played in the Seville game. Financially, Celtic is unable to compete with Borussia Dortmund. Rangers are currently a complete mess, thus they are unable to compete.
Celtic need to learn to pick their moments
Although there are aspects, they do not provide the whole story. Celtic needs to have the ability to judge when to press, attack, and—above all—defend. Celtic essentially used the same strategy that they had used against St Johnstone over the weekend; the only difference was that Dortmund was also using offensive football, which helped them with Celtic’s tactics.
It is not acceptable to lose seven goals. Seven goals is not acceptable, and this is hardly an isolated incident. Dortmund is now part of the group of teams led by Brendan Rodgers that have humiliated Celtic teams with seven goals. However, during his two stints at Celtic, the squad has been unbeatable domestically. The key will need to be closing the gap in the Champions League; Celtic have plenty of wealth and can easily afford to bolster the team further in January and again the following summer.
