Jobe Bellingham has delivered a strong message to Sunderland fans following Tuesday’s triumph over Derby County at the Stadium of Light, with a big game against Leeds United coming up on Friday night.

There were some concerns that Sunderland were starting to falter after losing two of their past three games, with the Tees-Wear Derby victory over Middlesbrough sandwiched between straight away defeats at Plymouth Argyle and Watford.

Sunderland’s start to the 2024/25 Championship campaign has been impressive, and Regis Le Bris’ hiring in the summer appears to be a wise decision.

They quickly got back on track, winning 2-0 against Derby yesterday night, with Bellingham and Wilson Isidor scoring either side of the break.

Bellingham’s strike was a true stunner, and the 18-year-old prodigy has now delivered a message to fans before of Friday’s home game against promotion rivals Leeds.

Following the Derby victory, Bellingham claimed that Sunderland intends to turn the Stadium of Light into a fortress ahead of the Leeds encounter, and will rely on supporters’ backing.

“We discussed it at the beginning of the season,” Bellingham told reporters.

“We wanted it to be a stronghold, and I believe it shows. We worked incredibly hard in the games. We’ve been really organized, and the fans have obviously helped.

“They got us over the line in the Burnley game, I’m trying to think of something else, and the Boro game, absolutely. So, when we have to move deeper and defend, the crowd rally behind us, and the goal is protected, doesn’t it?

“It’s amazing and we’ve obviously kept four clean sheets at home, which is another big, big bonus.”

Sunderland returned to the top of the league standings after defeating Derby, but they will have a tough test when Leeds visit. Daniel Farke’s team, which were 90 minutes away from a Premier League return in last season’s play-off final, has begun the season strongly and is only three points behind the Black Cats.

Leeds may probably provide Sunderland’s most difficult challenge to date, and Bellingham is fully aware of what to anticipate from the Whites.

“It’ll be another really tough test,” he continued.

“Today was a different kind of difficulty from what that will be like. Leeds are known to be a formidable opponent, aren’t they? We’ll have to confront the challenge, see what we can accomplish, and strive to overcome it as a team with the supporters.

“It will be a huge advantage against a really strong club with really excellent players who were right up there last year, which is where we want to be. So we’ll have to battle against those kind of clubs, and being at home gives us a significant edge.

Sunderland will be confident for the forthcoming Leeds United showdown.

Although the midfielder is right in categorizing the impending match as a severe test, it is one that Sunderland can easily pass.

They have already earned three points against two potential promotion opponents, Burnley and Middlesbrough, and the fact that both of those triumphs occurred on Wearside should boost their confidence heading into the Leeds game.

Le Bris’ team is yet to surrender a goal at home and has a crowded Stadium of Light to depend on, which might work to their benefit once more.
