EXCLUSIVE; “A fairly chunky fee” – Norwich City: January 2025 transfer forecast published.
This post is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, which features personal comments from FLW Fan Pundits on breaking news, teams, players, managers, possible signings, and more.
Norwich City has had a mixed start to the current Championship season.
Johannes Hoff Thorup took over as manager in the summer, succeeding David Wagner.
The Dane has been charged with leading the squad to a promotion challenge this year, after they reached the play-offs the previous season.
However, with only two victories in their first six games, they have fallen behind their opponents in these early stages of the season, and there are no obvious leaders in the Championship thus far, with many fighting for consistency.
The Canaries may already be planning for the January transfer window as they want to finish in the top six this season.
Norwich City’s January transfer window prediction
According to FLW’s Norwich fan commentator Zeke Downes, the club expects to invest in at least one new player in January.
He feels that the prospect of a promotion challenge will motivate the leadership to support the manager and bolster his first-team group in mid-season.
“In the January transfer window, I can see clubs spending money on players,” Downes told Football League World.
“I’m not sure how much it will cost, but I believe it will be a little amount of money.
“I see it happening.”
“I believe we will be in a position where we are looking well and nearing the playoffs, and they will want to make a few more additions.
“But I believe there will be one, and it will be a rather large fee.
“I don’t know what position we’d be looking at, but I can see that happening.”
Norwich City’s league position
Norwich lost important players Jonathan Rowe, Gabriel Sara, and Adam Idah during the summer transfer window.
The Canaries signed Ante Crnac, Amankwah Forson, José Córdoba, Oscar Schwartau, and Ben Chrisene in an effort to strengthen their first-team roster.
However, they have only eight points from a possible 18 this season, with two wins, two draws, and two losses.
Championship standings 2024-25 (As of September 27th) | ||||
Team | P | GD | Pts | |
6 | Leeds United | 6 | +5 | 11 |

9 | Oxford United | 6 | +2 | 9 |
10 | Derby County | 6 | +1 | 9 |
11 | Norwich City | 6 | +1 | 8 |
This has left the Canaries 11th in the league heading into the weekend’s latest round of action.
Norwich will meet Derby County at Pride Park on Saturday, with a 12.30pm kickoff.
Promotion drive by January might demand a major Norwich City acquisition.
If Norwich are in contention for a top six slot by January, which is quite likely, a huge acquisition may make the difference.
Thorup is still sorting things out at Norwich, which might explain the team’s poor start, but if they play to their full ability, they could be flying by the winter.
Adding a final piece to the puzzle with a big-money acquisition may be all they need to cross the finish line and earn another playoff spot.
After all, they earned large fees for Rowe and Sara’s sales in the summer (although Rowe’s permanent move will not be completed until the summer of 2025), so they should still have some money to spend.
