Ally McCoist forced into Rangers clarification live on air as he receives ‘dog’s abuse’ over misheard Celtic claim.
Although it appears that several Rangers supporters misheard McCoist when he declared that Celtic had never triumphed in Germany.
Rangers supporters, according to Ally McCoist, were trying to get him to take a “dog’s abuse,” accusing him of missing their victory in Dortmund when Gio van Bronckhorst was in charge.
But the Ibrox star says bettors jumping down his throat simply misunderstood his argument – as he expressly meant that Celtic had never triumphed in Germany. The popular pundit was in the chair of talKSPORT on Tuesday morning, and the game between the Hoops and Borussia Dortmund was a top topic of discussion. He heaped admiration on Brendan Rodgers’ team and declared they “have a chance” to pull off an upset, but he countered that with some very dismal statistics from their previous trips to Germany.
In an interview with Andy Townsend and Paul Lambert, McCoist brought up the fact that Celtic has never triumphed in a European match played in Germany, having lost nine of their previous 11 visits. However, he was compelled to clarify something later in the same broadcast, suggesting that some Rangers fans misheard him.
On their route to the Seville final, the Germans famously defeated Dortmund 4-2 at the Westfalenstadion in the round of 32. Fans believed that McCoist had stated that no Scottish team had ever triumphed in Germany. However, he clarified, saying, “I simply have a little word to say. The Rangers supporters have been very harsh with me, claiming that I should have won the game in Dortmund a few years ago. Still, I didn’t mention a Scottish squad. I stated that Celtic had lost nine out of the previous eleven games and each of the previous four. Not a word about any other team.
“So get off my back. Please, it’s terrible enough that Celtic are winning without the Rangers supporters getting excited.
