Sunderland to make checks on injured pair ahead of Derby County and Leeds United clashes

Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris has said they will assess Dan Ballard and Eliezer Mayenda ahead of their upcoming Championship fixtures.

Sunderland left the pair out of their squad over the weekend at Vicarage Road against Watford due to injuries. They went on to lose 2-1 to Watford.

Mayenda, 19, has a muscle ailment, while Ballard, 25, has an ankle problem. As the Black Cats get ready to host Derby County at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday night, they will be examined during the course of the following day.

Friday’s game at home against Leeds United could be a more reasonable return date for the two if they aren’t prepared to play the Rams. According to a report by The Northern Echo, Le Bris provided an update on their condition and stated, “They are injured.” For the following game, though, we’ll see. Although Eliezer’s muscle issue is not too significant, we’ll have to wait and see if he can play against Derby.

Ballard is a vital member of Sunderland’s defense, so having him back would be advantageous.

He left Arsenal in 2022 to become a permanent member of the North East team. The center back progressed through the Gunners’ academy system, although he never played at the senior level for the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

Instead, in order to get experience before the Black Cats called, he was loaned out to Millwall, Blackpool, and Swindon Town.

Since then, Ballard has participated in 69 games in all competitions for his current club, scoring three goals from the back.

Regarding Mayenda, the striker has had a strong start to the season. The teenager needed some time to adjust to life in England after moving there in July of last year.

In order to receive some playing experience in Edinburgh before heading back to Sunderland for the preseason, he was loaned out to Hibernian last season.
