Martin Zubimendi to Liverpool transfer still possible as insider makes intriguing claims over January deal

Martin Zubimendi to Liverpool move is still feasible, according to a source, who makes fascinating allegations about the January transaction.

Liverpool are still keeping an eye on Martin Zubimendi’s status, as there are reports that the midfielder might still come to Anfield in January, with an insider journalist explaining what he knows about why a big-money trade is still possible.

On Sunday, Liverpool agreed to match the £50.5 million (€60 million, $67.5 million) provision in the Euro 2024 winner’s Real Sociedad contract and reached personal terms with the player, making him the first new signing under new manager Arne Slot. However, the 25-year-old had a last-minute change of heart and chose to stay with his local club, leaving the Merseysiders empty-handed.

Slot chose to rely on his existing players instead of signing new ones. However, Zibmendi has expressed regret for rejecting the Reds after Sociedad’s poor start to the season and their failure to offer him a new contract.

David Lynch, a noted Liverpool journalist, feels that the issue should be closely monitored as the January transfer window approaches.

The reporter told Anfield Agenda’s YouTube channel that negotiations between him and Sociedad are necessary to arrange a prospective departure.

“I keep telling you that he hasn’t signed that deal yet, so keep an eye on it. That is fascinating. I assumed that would be a condition of his continued employment (a wage raise).

“Aside from the compensation increase, it was always about determining the value of the release clause. Clearly, it has not happened yet. Sociedad has had a bad start, so will they be in contention for much at the end of the season? It already appears that they may not be.

“Come January, he might have a pivotal moment in determining where Sociedad’s season is going. If that’s the case, nobody in Liverpool has informed me that bridges have been torched. As long as that’s true, you’d want to believe there’s a slight chance.”
As Romano delivers a transfer update, Liverpool considers Zubimendi as an alternative.

Lynch said, “So much depends on the player and if he’d turn to Sociedad and say, ‘Look, I genuinely do want to go this time, now is the moment to make the transfer’. We have not received any evidence from Spain that this is the case yet.”

Another reporter, Fabrizio Romano, agrees, stating earlier this week that Zubimendi remained a player of interest for the Reds, and the fact that they did not sign a substitute told a compelling tale.

According to the Italian, Liverpool’s board, directors, and manager are all interested in Zubimendi, and Slot has identified him as a suitable target.

“But now they recognize that nothing is new, nothing is fresh, and nothing has changed, despite some stories in Spain stating he now regrets turning down a transfer to Liverpool, and perhaps there is still hope he might go. However, Liverpool has yet to receive any signals of a change from Zubimendi or Real Sociedad.”

Our understanding of the problem, however, is that while Liverpool may still pursue the 25-year-old, Ryan Gravenberch’s brilliance has caused Slot to reconsider, as he believes investing such a large sum on an alternative will stifle his spectacular progress in the team this season.

Instead, they are looking at a cheaper option in Slot’s former Feyenoord charge Quinten Timber – the twin brother of Arsenal’s Jurrien – who appeals not just for his ability to play at the base of midfield, but also for his versatility.

The most recent transactions involve Alexander-Arnold and Salah, while a Freiburg star is connected with Liverpool.

According to writer Christian Falk, Liverpool scouts have been monitoring Freiburg star Merlin Rohl in recent matches as a potential midfield addition.

And, with those in attendance delighted by what they saw, it is said that the Bundesliga club has given the 22-year-old new terms as they attempt to tie down the midfielder, amid speculation that sports director Richard Hughes may launch a January move.

However, Romano is sure that the player’s first-choice is Anfield, and there is a growing expectation that a new contract will soon be negotiated.

Mo Salah is reportedly ‘expected’ to leave Liverpool and join a Saudi Pro League team at the conclusion of the season, raising concerns over his future.
