“It has authority over your life, do you understand? You spend a week worrying about it after each game when you don’t obtain a result.

“All you want is the next game to be there. That’s where we are. Hopefully, Saturday will be just the right amount of positivity to turn things around.”

Hearts go to Azerbaijan to face Minsk behind closed doors, since UEFA sanctioned Belarus for its involvement in Russia’s war with Ukraine. And Shankland believes the change of environment – and lack of fans – will be the spark that ignites their season.

“It’s good; it’s a pleasant change from the league and a different tournament to compete in. It may be a variety of games; they are pleasant, and we hope to get a few nice outcomes throughout the league stage.”
