Wayne Rooney has sent a message to Plymouth Argyle supporters following their 3-1 victory over Luton Town on Friday night.

Rami Al Hajj’s eighth-minute goal put the Pilgrims ahead, and Ibrahim Cissoko increased their lead in the second half.

Cissoko scored twice in stoppage time to clinch all three points after Victor Moses equalized immediately after falling down 2-0.

The win is Plymouth’s second in three games, giving them eight points from their first seven matches.

The result could relieve some of the strain on Rooney, who lost his first four league games in charge before picking up six points from his last nine, including a win against Sunderland.

Wayne Rooney issues Plymouth message

Ibrahim Cissoko

Rooney expressed his thanks to the home supporters for their support on Friday night, complimenting the atmosphere they created at Home Park.

He will be looking for more of the same throughout the season as they seek to escape relegation this year.

Rooney said on Instagram, “There was some atmosphere last night.”

“Thanks for all your support.”

Rooney’s hiring was regarded with significant scrutiny because of his past management experience at Birmingham City.

The 38-year-old lasted only 15 games in command, winning only twice, and the Blues were eventually relegated at the end of the season.

But he has now supervised more victories for the Pilgrims than he did at St. Andrews, with this latest success propelling the squad to 13th position before the remainder of the weekend’s action begins.

Plymouth finished 21st in the Championship last season and aims to improve in their second year in the second tier.

If the squad can maintain its recent form, it remains a real possibility.

Plymouth Argyle’s season opener

Plymouth lost their first game 4-0 at Hillsborough and had to wait until September 14th for their first victory.

Rooney’s first goal came in a 3-2 home triumph over then-league leaders Sunderland, and a second victory in front of their own fans has built up a gap to the bottom three teams.

Plymouth’s next game is a midweek away trip to Burnley, with kickoff at Turf Moor scheduled for 7.45pm.

The Pilgrims are still looking for their first away win of the season, getting only one point from nine road games thus far.

Rooney wanted Luton to win this week.

Given that former Plymouth manager Steven Schumacher is again back on the managing market, Rooney needed a win to relieve any pressure on his job.

There may be some temptation for the club to return to Schumacher following the success he gave to the squad, which led them to promotion in 2023.

However, if Rooney continues to produce solid performances, particularly at home, his place will be secure.

Beating a team that has recently been relegated from the Premier League is also a good indication for the manager, and should fill him with confidence for the remainder of the season.
