Neil McCann lambasted Vaclav Cerny live on Sky Sports for committing a “terrible thing” as Rangers clung on for a nail-biting 1-0 victory over Hibs.

In the 48th minute of the encounter on September 29, the Sky Sports pundit responded live on the outlet’s match coverage. The Czech winger won control on the right flank deep in his own half and played an aimless bad pass to James Tavernier, which was easily intercepted by Junior Hoilett.

Losing possession allowed Hibs to send a cross into the box from Jordan Obita, which was finally cleared by Robin Propper as the ball bounced awkwardly, and McCann blamed the entire incident on Cerny.

He stated (1.11pm): “It was bouncing around at a terrifying height. Cerny performs fantastic job and then makes a dreadful mistake by giving up possession in the last third; it’s so awful.”

It didn’t come at a cost on the day, as Philippe Clement’s side just about held on through an increasingly scruffy second half to clinch their fourth consecutive win since the Old Firm derby defeat at Celtic.

However, Cerny’s poor performance was indicative of his increasingly unsatisfactory form, despite the Light Blues’ overall improvement.

The 26-year-old was one of the bright points of the early weeks of the campaign, showing obvious quality in his first few outings as Clement restricted his minutes. The excellent winning goal he scored in the 2-1 win over Motherwell at Hampden Park (10 August) seemed to be a positive sign of things to come.

However, he was absent for the 1-0 win at Dundee after the international break (15 September) and had a poor night in the Europa League at Malmo this week, finishing with a terrible miss in the first half.

Few would argue that Ross McCausland is a better overall player, but the Northern Irishman came on to score a fantastic goal in Sweden and seemed even more confident against Hibs.

Cerny was expected to take the lead after Rabbi Matondo’s long-term injury [Football Scotland, 5 September], but he appears to have taken a backward step and appears less confident than before.
