Gary O'Neil made one decision for Wolves that was actually unfathomable against Liverpool

Wolves are in peril after suffering yet another Premier League defeat against Liverpool.

The team lost 2-1 to the Reds at Molineux on Saturday, resulting in five losses and one tie in the first six games.

Wolves fans anticipated a challenging start to the new season. The fixture list was extremely challenging, and many predicted a low points total at the end of September.

Many Wolves supporters have expressed concern because the team has really played games and been in strong positions.

However, Wolves have lacked the ability to convert their positive spells into more goals and hence more points.

Gary O’Neil lately made dubious judgments, including one in the second half against Liverpool that was simply puzzling.

Gary O’Neil’s decision to play Hwang Hee-chan against Liverpool instead of Goncalo Guedes was very controversial.

In his first season as Molineux manager, O’Neil did a lot of things correctly.

However, he has recently done some unusual things.

Playing Jean-Ricner Bellegarde as a winger has not worked, and deploying Joao Gomes and Mario Lemina as advanced midfielders at different stages this season has been unusual.

O’Neil made an unusual substitution against Liverpool, replacing Hwang Hee-chan with Jorgen Strand Larsen.

Taking off Strand Larsen was controversial in and of itself, given the Norwegian served as an outlet for Wolves and also contributed to the equalizer.

But putting on Hwang over Gonzalo Guedes was perplexing.

Hwang is currently out of form. Guedes is really Wolves’ best scorer this season. Despite the fact that all three of his goals came in the Carabao Cup, he is in far better shape than Hwang.

Hwang’s bad judgment was made more worse, with only four touches (via Sofascore).

Guedes needs additional minutes.

Things are grim right now, and O’Neil has to attempt new things.

Hwang had no incentive to play against Liverpool given his previous poor results.

It seemed inexplicable that Guedes received no minutes, given that he had scored several goals this season.

The Portuguese forward received a lot of attention this summer. But O’Neil was clearly satisfied with what he was providing in the buildup to the 2024/25 season, and it is now time to rely on him more.

He has yet to make a Premier League start, and this must change when he joins Brentford.
