Following the demolition of St Johnstone, the manager had a message for his detractors.
Brendan Rodgers, according to Tam McManus, has disregarded his own counsel at Celtic after their 6-0 thrashing of St Johnstone.
Having watched his team thrash the managerless Saints six goals to none, the manager was upbeat during his post-match press conference in Perth. He also addressed those who had criticized their style of play the previous year. After a string of poor performances, including giving away points against the Perth Saints early in the season, that allowed Rangers to reclaim the title, the Hoops faced criticism on their route to the Premiership and Scottish Cup.
After the demolition job, though, Rodgers responded to the doubters, saying, “Yeah, not bad for a team that doesn’t play good football.” That’s what we were informed, I believe, last year. That, I believe, was the charge. We didn’t play football, we moved too slowly, and we didn’t score enough goals. Therefore, it’s not terrible for a team that isn’t producing quality football.
Although McManus, a former Hibs striker, believes the manager should follow his own advise to “stay humble,” he has urged his Celtic teammates to remain grounded in the wake of a run of outstanding performances. The analyst also mentioned Kilmarnock and St Johnstone’s disappointing outcomes from the previous campaign, which drew criticism.
He continued, turning to X, “Excellent performance and outcome. Looks like a really strong Celtic team, but as Celtic wasn’t playing well at the time, there was no need for the pop. That’s proved by not finding the net against Kilmarnock and St Johnstone in consecutive weeks. Brendan keeps talking about remaining modest. I apologize, but he wasn’t here.
