Way-Too-Early Mock Draft: Giants Make Ward Face of Franchise

It seems like every passing week makes the New York Giants more likely to move on from quarterback Daniel Jones. However, it’s likely just an illusion of recency bias. New York is no more likely now than it was a month ago to find a new franchise quarterback. The writing has been on the wall for months.

Now, it’s just a matter of who will have the fortune of throwing to receiver Malik Nabers.

For months, the favorite had been Georgia quarterback Carson Beck. He’s the class’ early favorite for QB1 and possibly the first quarterback off the board in April. But if the Giants aren’t picking first, or fall in love with another passer, who might they pivot to?

Cam Ward hasn't played a real game yet ...

In CBS Sports’ recent mock draft, New York selects third overall and picks Miami quarterback Cam Ward.

This may not be the consolation prize it would have been perceived as this summer.

“The Giants turn the page at quarterback with the multi-faceted Ward,” Chris Trapasso wrote. “He’s been sensational to begin the 2024 campaign at the University of Miami.”

Entering Week 5 of the college football season, Ward was the Heisman Trophy favorite with +375 odds. He opened at +2000 and tacked on another promising performance on Friday.

Ward, in many ways, is everything Jones isn’t. His arm talent is undeniable, and while the lower-body mechanics can get ugly at times, he retains velocity and accuracy seemingly effortlessly – and often without a strong base. His upper-body mechanics are special and he’s far better out of structure than Jones.

There are warts, like many quarterback prospects, regarding his consistency and decision-making, but his production has far outpaced his weaknesses through September.

There’s never a guarantee in the NFL Draft, especially under center. But the Giants wouldn’t be getting a passer in the same archetype as Jones, and they’d be adding a passer who can answer questions in and out structure with his physical talent.

That in itself should be enough to earn the approval of the New York faithful.
