Liverpool boss Arne Slot comments on Wolves this season and delivers ‘surprise’ verdict

Wolves haven’t had much to shout about at the start of this season following four defeats from their first five games.

It’s a return that puts Wolves at the bottom of the Premier League at this early stage, with off-field issues compounding their agony.
Gary O’Neil received the tragic news that Yerson Mosquera will be out for the season after hurting his MCL and ACL in the defeat to Aston Villa.

The Wolves manager is also facing an injury issue ahead of Liverpool’s visit to Molineux, as a virus has spread around the squad, putting some players, notably Toti Gomes, in question.

With the Old Gold suffering from injury issues and underperforming in the league, it’s no surprise that Liverpool are expected to thrash Wolves, though manager Arne Slot did praise his opponents.

Arne Slot thinks Wolves have deserved better this season

Wolves have no excuses for being at the bottom of the table, but there have been some positives to take from their first games.

The Wanderers were excellent in the first half against Chelsea before breaking apart in the second half, a pattern that has continued in defeats to Newcastle and, most recently, Aston Villa.

Wolves had an early lead against Liverpool last season, but the visitors won thanks to goals from Cody Gakpo, Andy Robertson, and an own goal by Hugo Bueno.

After rewatching that 2023/24 game and looking at O’Neil’s team this season, Arne Slot believes the Wanderers do not deserve to be in their current position.

“If you look at our games, it’s always the first 15-20 minutes. Both teams have energy, and the games are hard,” Slot told the Liverpool Echo.

“Then the games settle down, and the team with the best performance gets the ball and begins to play. When it comes to Wolves, it’s not surprising because they play terrific football and may not have received the results they deserve.

“Last season, Wolves were ahead, and I believe it took Robbo till the 85th minute to take the lead. He does not have a high score. We need to be prepared for every game from the start, two squads full of energy.”

Wolves vs Liverpool prediction

Wolves fans can only blame Fosun for their current position, with youngster Alfie Pond set to make his Premier League debut.

The odds were already stacked against the hosts causing an upset, and now that a virus has infected the squad, their prospects are ten times worse.

Liverpool has started the season in good form under Slot, scoring ten goals and conceded only one; these are the kinds of stats that Wolves will be concerned about.

That is why the Reds will believe they can record a comfortable win at Molineux, further putting O’Neil’s side in trouble.
