Leeds United Championship rivals snap up ex-AC Milan coach after Elland Road raid

Leeds United Championship rivals snap up ex-AC Milan coach after Elland Road raid.

Norwich City, Leeds United’s rivals in the Championship, has announced the hiring of a seasoned coach to the Carrow Road backroom staff.

Under head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup, Tony Roberts, a former goalkeeper for Wales, has joined the Canaries as head of goalkeeping.

Roberts brings a wealth of expertise to Thorup’s team having worked under Arsène Wenger at Arsenal, with Chris Coleman in the Wales system, and most recently at AC Milan, an Italian powerhouse.

Next Tuesday, Norwich is set to play Leeds at Carrow Road for the third time in a year, and Roberts is anticipated to be in the dugout.

It comes after Leeds poached their head goalkeeping coach Ed Wootten, who moved from Norwich to Elland Road last summer to work with former Canaries manager Daniel Farke after being hired by Leeds.

In the end, United’s two-leg victory over Norwich in the Championship play-off semifinal last season cost former Canaries manager David Wagner his job.

Leeds and Norwich have both started the 2024–25 season quite well; after six games, Norwich is now sitting in mid-table with eight points. Leeds, on the other hand, has won 11 of its first round of games and is currently a few spots above 11th in sixth.
