Carlos Corberán | ‘We wasted the first 45 minutes’

Carlos Corberán says Albion’s performance in the opening half at Hillsborough was far from the level he and the players expect.

The Baggies trailed Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 at halftime thanks to an unlucky own goal from Darnell Furlong and a Josh Windass header, and they were second-best for much of the game.

They rallied back to 2-2 thanks to Josh Maja and substitute Alex Mowatt, but Anthony Musaba’s late winner handed Corberán’s troops their first league defeat of the season.

The manager believes the team gave themselves much too much work to do and said they didn’t “manage the game well enough” – yet he wanted to start his interview with WBA TV by wishing the supporter who became ill in the away end all the best.

Carlos said: “First and foremost, our thoughts are with the Albion fan who became unwell during the game. We all hope they continue to improve, and it is critical that they overcome this extremely scary circumstance.

“For me, we didn’t demonstrate our level in the first half of the game.

“We have not competed at the required level, and we have made the game more difficult for ourselves.

“We got back into the game at 2-2 after falling behind 2-0, but we conceded the goal in the next action.

“We did not manage the minutes well after scoring our second goal. We were throwing away fouls, so we couldn’t manage the game.

“We did not adequately defend the action that resulted in their second goal.

“I did not see many opportunities for them in the second half. We were in control of the game and creating chances, but we didn’t get off to the right start in the first half.

“We know they’re a press-ready team with a lot of transitions. For the first goal, we tried to press from a disadvantageous position. We couldn’t press, and we needed to be solid. They switched the play, and the ball went in off Darnell Furlong. It was the first time they had entered the last third of the pitch.

“We didn’t start attacking, and we didn’t figure out how to break down their defensive structure.

“Then, for the second goal, they employed another of their strengths: balls forward from the back. We worked on it before the game, but regrettably, there are some circumstances in football that you don’t handle properly.

“They scored their second goal by passing the ball from behind to right in front of our goalkeeper.

“In general, we weren’t able to attack effectively until John Swift moved deeper to find balls in midfield positions. From there, the squad grew and attacked more effectively, but we had wasted 45 minutes of the contest.

“We need to analyze the game and accept responsibility for improving.

“You will not always get the desired results. Now it’s time to react. We’ll go again on Tuesday.

“We enjoy extending good times, but today we couldn’t. The fact that we have suffered one defeat implies that we must put more effort into our next performance.

“If you hate the feeling of defeat, which we do, you want to recover the feeling of victory as quickly as possible.”
