Ally McCoist Drops ‘Crazy’ Rangers Verdict Amid Win v Malmo
Despite expressing his compassion for the Belgian manager, Ally McCoist has criticized the Rangers organization surrounding Philippe Clement, calling the lack of stability at the team “very, very poor”.
After five games, Rangers has 10 points in the Scottish Premiership, third in the standings. Earlier this month, they lost handily to Celtic in the Old Firm derby. The Gers did, however, win their first-ever Europa League match, defeating Malmo 2-0 in Sweden last night with to goals from Nedim Bajrami and Ross McCausland.
Although McCoist feels the disorganized structure within the club’s management hasn’t helped, Clement, who succeeded former manager Michael Beale over a year ago, has drawn criticism for the Glasgow giants’ season opening performance.
Clement took over for Beale and guided Rangers to a second-place finish last season, but Celtic won the league by eight points, handily defeating the tactician’s team. The former Monaco boss will have to work hard to get the Bhoys closer to their city rivals this season, as they are currently five points behind.
Prior to the Malmo game, McCoist discussed his opinions of Clement’s tenure thus far in an interview with TNT Sports.
To be honest with you, given the circumstances at the club at the time, he needs everyone’s sympathies. The prior employees and the hiring process weren’t up to par. To be honest, they have spent a lot of money, and not all of it has been wisely spent. In that sense, he feels a little bit confined.
“Not having a chairman is also important from the manager’s perspective. Although he is a good man who will succeed, John Gilligan is not a chief executive. The manager is not doing well because of things like that, you know, the current state of stability around the club is extremely, very bad. It can also find its way onto the football field. That may sound ridiculous to many, yet it can work.
I therefore feel sorry for him. Nevertheless, I believe that everyone’s eyes were somewhat opened by the Celtics game. The distance existing between the two sides. The full-back was close to leaving the club
Captain James Tavernier’s comeback to form might be a boost for Clement. The goal-scoring right-back was strongly connected to a summer transfer to Turkey, with Rangers reportedly willing to let him go, but in the end, he decided to stay at Ibrox for at least one more season.
The 32-year-old has had a strange start to the new season, and Chris Sutton, a commentator who was once a Celtic striker, has disclosed that he’s not sure if Tavernier’s “heart is still in it” at Rangers.
The skipper, who has faced criticism for his performances so far this season, is keen to disprove his detractors with tough games still to come, including matches against Lyon and Hibernian.
