Despite the fact that many anticipated a new defensive addition, Matt Hobbs has clarified why they never intended to bring in a fifth centre-back to take Kilman’s spot.

With Mosquera joining the team following a fruitful loan at Villarreal, he believed that Wolves were good to start the season with their existing lineup, especially the Colombian, who they intend to turn into the next great thing.

“You can argue that we didn’t replace Max based on the goals we’ve given up this season, but we had a bad finish to the previous campaign [with Kilman starting every game].”

“Max wasn’t at blame for that, any more than Yerson was this season. In order to prepare them, we also want to include a young player in this plan.

Hobbs also disclosed that Wolves would have loaned out Santi Bueno for regular football play if they had signed another centre-back.

“Santiago Bueno would have gone out on loan for regular football, even if we’d signed another one and we were looking,” he continued.

Wolves punished for not signing a centre-back

Since joining the team, Mosquera has been a breath of new air; up until his bizarre injury, the 23-year-old had been playing well with Dawson.

Now since the young defender is expected to miss the entire season due to injury, everyone knew that signing a centre-back was crucial, even though unluck cannot be taken into account when planning a trade.

Kilman led Wolves last season and was a dependable presence at the back; hence, rather than investing a significant sum of money on a player to carry on his legacy, the team has opted to rely on youngsters.

They should be commended for their belief in young players, but that doesn’t mean they were correct to pass on signing a centre back.

A more seasoned professional would have not only steadied the ship but also given Mosquera more time to get used to life in the Premier League rather than throwing him in headfirst.
