Matchday Memories: On This Day 1988 – Sillett’s Sky Blues Squash Cherries In Cup On South Coast

On this day (September 27, 1988), thirty-six years ago, former Sky Blue fullback John Sillett’s Sky Blues traveled to the south coast for a Littlewoods Cup second round first leg encounter against AFC Bournemouth. Unfortunately, the game lost the greatly missed Sills two years ago.

Harry Redknapp’s team had only lost once in six games, but were annihilated by a rampaging Sky Blues side, making the second leg a formality. The Sky Blues scored four goals without reply in front of 6,453 fans at Dean Court.

Greg Downs scored the first on 10 minutes, and Micky Gynn, Greg’s now fellow CCFPA member, scored the second twenty minutes later (both from outside the box). The half-time score of 2-0 was doubled in the second quarter thanks to howlers from the Cherries’ defenders. Gary Bannister took advantage at 63 minutes, and Micky completed his double two minutes later.

The Cherries were thoroughly polished off in this first game, and CCFC’s 3-1 triumph in the second leg a fortnight later, with goals from Steve Sedgley, David Speedie, and Micky Gynn (all now Association members), resulted in a 7-1 aggregate win.

On this day, two teams competed: Steve Ogrizovic, Brian Borrows, Greg Downs, Steve Sedgley, Brian Kilcline, Trevor Peake, Micky Gynn, David Speedie, Cyrille Regis, Gary Bannister, and David Smith.

Harry Redknapp’s AFC Bournemouth consisted of:

Gerry Peyton, Mark Newson, Paul Morrell, Kevin Bond, John Williams, Mark Whitlock (sub Carl Richards), Richard Cooke, Shaun Brookes (sub Sean O’Driscoll), Trevor Aylott, Ian Bishop, Shaun Close. Referee: Kelvin Cooper.

(NB: The Cherries) John Williams is not the same as the well-known former Sky Blue forward (and current CCFPA member).

That was the best the Sky Blues could do in the Littlewoods Cup, as they were knocked out in the third round 3-2 by Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Meanwhile, the Sky Blues finished in a very acceptable seventh place in Division One 1988-89. Arsenal narrowly defeated runners-up Liverpool (on points) to win the title, while Middlesbrough, West Ham United, and Newcastle United were relegated.
