Ahead of the January transfer window, Burnley, Norwich City, Hull, and West Brom are the four Championship teams actively observing Lincoln City midfielder Ethan Erhahon.
As the situation in England’s second division becomes more apparent, clubs are making preparations for the mid-season transfer window in an effort to strengthen their chances of promotion while masking some roster deficiencies.
Furthermore, TBR can confirm that Burnley and West Bromwich Albion, two teams vying for promotion, are among the growing number of admirers of one of the Football League’s most impressive young players, who may be given the chance to advance up the ladder.
In 2023–2024, Ethan Erhahon was recognized as Lincoln City’s Players’ Player of the Year.
The 23-year-old Glasgow native has continued his success from last season, starting all six League One games for the Imps, who are presently coached by former Leeds United player Michael Skubala and sitting in the play-off spots.
TBR is aware that Norwich and Hull are interested in Erhahon in addition to Burnley and the Baggies under Carlos Corberan.
Burnley and West Brom are vying for Ethan Erhahon of Lincoln City.
Erhahon, a former Scotland Under 21 international, moved from St Mirren to Lincoln in 2023.
Erhahon has been called the greatest defensive midfield player in the third division “by a mile,” and Skubala acknowledges that his team will “struggle” to hold onto him in the face of growing interest from teams in the higher league.
Lincoln’s director of football Jez George says, “I don’t think clubs in the Championship will be doing their jobs properly if there wasn’t interest,” in an interview with BBC Radio Lincolnshire in May.
“He has performed exceptionally well.”
When it comes time to leave Sincil Bank, George says he would be “amazed” if Erhahon did not end up being the most costly export in Lincoln’s history.
At present, Harry Toffollo holds that distinction.
Toffolo, one of Erhahon’s numerous admirers, began his career at Norwich and is currently a Premier League player with Nottingham Forest after leaving Lincoln for a reported £640,000 two years ago.
Should Erhahon receive an offer that benefits both the team and the player, the Imps have no intention of getting in the way of him.
George stated, “It’s about career advancement and the right club.”
“Therefore, as a football club we have to look at that if the right club comes in with the right financial package for Ethan that could be life changing, quadrupling his wages, and it is an absolutely huge number for Lincoln City.”
Targets Norwich and Hull City look up to Rodri
It’s unclear how much Lincoln will ask for.
As far as TBR is aware, at least four Championship clubs are currently evaluating bids. Given that both teams may be playing Premier League football in a year, Erhahon will undoubtedly be drawn to the idea of joining Burnley, who are now in third place, or league leaders West Brom.
During the summer, Burnley and West Brom also lost their starting defensive midfield players. Okay Yokuslu joined Fulham after Manchester United expressed interest, and Sander Berge returned to Turkey with Trabzonspor.
In contrast, Hull and Norwich have only split their three victories this season and are off to a lackluster start.
Erhahon might, however, believe that regular first-team playing time at the MKM or Carrow Road would be more realistic than at Turf Moor or The Hawthorns.
Erhahon, who averages the third-most passes on the Lincoln squad, is the main guy responsible for Skubala’s Imps’ success. In a recent interview with The Football League Paper, he expressed his respect for Rodri, the Spain great, and his job at Manchester City.
“Erhahon stated that Rodri is among the world’s best players, not just defensive midfielders.”
You understand how essential he is to Man City and myself.
