Carlos Corberan on whether West Brom have changed anything on the road

Carlos Corberan on if West Brom made any changes on the road.

Carlos Corberán keen to change fortunes on the road | West Bromwich Albion

Carlos Corberan understands the difficulties of winning on the road, as Albion’s unbeaten record is tested.

The Baggies face Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Saturday lunchtime, where Corberan’s side suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat in April.

Last season, Albion did not always perform well away from The Hawthorns. Albion’s away record in the division was best described as mid-table. Corberan’s squad won only six of their 23 regular road games, plus one in the play-offs.

This season, they are almost halfway to breaking that record, and defeating Danny Rohl’s Owls would give them their fourth win in a row.

Corberan repeated his position that preparation for a game away from The Hawthorns is no different from that for a game in the Black Country – but the head coach highlighted the additional challenges clubs confront on their travels and the need for an extra degree of tenacity.

“I believe that winning away games is always a little more difficult than winning at home, because at home you have your conditions, your pitch, and the adaptation is there,” Corberan stated before of the match in South Yorkshire.

“Your fans are present. In the first half, you get help, attack, increase energy, and expand your options. Opponents can experience the reverse.

“When we play away, we face a different dressing room, pitch, and habits. Being at home can increase the opponent’s determination compared to away games.”

“But I believe we must learn from this. We need to increase (our determination away from home). You never play differently at home or abroad. You must be mindful of the challenge of playing away, but you can only let it boost your chances.”

Albion began their campaign on the road in the greatest possible fashion, with a Josh Maja hat-trick-inspired 3-1 victory over QPR after going down early at Loftus Road. Corberan was particularly delighted with his men’ refusal to wilt following the initial blow in the city. The undefeated Baggies then survived a tense match at Stoke before coasting to win over newly promoted Portsmouth.

The Spaniard has always stated that he prefers to consider performance level above results, as outcomes may be unpredictable due to bad luck or a goal against the run of play.

“The important thing in football is how you compete and perform,” he told the audience. “It isn’t just about the results. When you don’t compete well, you can still accomplish outcomes. An opponent has one opportunity to miss, and you have one chance to score, and the outcome is determined.

“You need to watch how the team plays at home and away. I really liked the spirit in the first game; we started by surrendering one goal and the squad maintained its identity.

“When the group becomes more cohesive, they recognize that there are more solutions to overcome difficulties when playing abroad.

“There is no difference in how we prepare for games. We have won three games, and nothing will change for the remaining eight games. For me, it’s recognizing that the challenge of winning away is continually increasing.”

Albion hope that midfielder Alex Mowatt (adductor) will be fit to face the Owls. Fellow midfielder Jayson Molumby (calf) missed the previous match against Plymouth but is expected to be fit again.
