A man from Sunderland suffered a shattered ankle after robbing a vape shop amid chaos.

A man who fractured his ankle after leaving a shop with “as many vapes as he could carry” has been locked up.

Anthony Hobkirk.

“I love **** like this” and “get rid of the black ***** from this country, too many of them” were recorded by 34-year-old Anthony Hobkirk during the widespread chaos that erupted in Sunderland on August 2. When night fell on the city and the unrest persisted, rioters lit fires and plundered stores, according to Newcastle Crown Court. Hobkirk was seen on security footage “sauntering away” from a vape shop that had been broken into, according to prosecutor Michael Bunch, but he fell and broke his ankle.

Hobkirk first came to the attention of the police after the vape business was looted, the court heard, adding that he had consumed “about eight pints” that day and claimed to be on the city for a dog walk.

“During the course of that he turned his ankle and sustained a fracture as a consequence of that.” According to what the court heard, during the examination of Hobkirk’s phone, the police discovered recordings that demonstrated both his presence in the city that entire day and the deplorable things he was saying. Hobkirk, who does not have a known address, was sentenced to 31 months in prison after admitting to violent disturbance and burglary. “You, along with many others, brought shame upon the city of Sunderland,” Judge Tim Gittins remarked to him.
