On a somber afternoon at FNB Stadium, the football community will gathered for the symbolic funeral of Kaizer Chiefs, a gesture representing the dominance of Mamelodi Sundowns FC over their long-standing rivals. The event, which will take place on 28th September 2024, marked the metaphorical end of Chiefs’ reign as one of the powerhouses in South African football.
The service we begin at 15:00, with Pastor Manqoba leading the ceremony, offering words of reflection and prayer over the end of an era for Kaizer Chiefs. Under the bright Johannesburg sky, thousands of fans from both camps will filled the stadium, to witness a symbolic moment that celebrated the rise of Mamelodi Sundowns, whose consistent victories over their rivals in recent years were seen as the cause of this funeral.
The ceremony highlighted the “murders” of Kaizer Chiefs at the hands of Sundowns’ star players, symbolized by the names Ribeiro, Rayners, and Mattews—key figures in Sundowns’ recent triumphs over their opponents. The imagery of these players contributing to the downfall of Kaizer Chiefs resonated with fans, as they represented Sundowns’ continued dominance on the field.
The hearse, driven by Khuliso Mudau, circled the stadium before arriving at the ceremonial stage, signaling the final moments of this symbolic farewell. The casket was carried by a group of Sundowns’ finest: Zwane, Modiba, Peter Shalulile, Grant Kekana, Mama, and Kobamelo Kodisang—all pivotal figures in Sundowns’ rise to supremacy. The solemn procession reminded everyone of the power shift that had occurred in South African football.
As the casket was placed down, the funeral reached its emotional peak. Fans chanted, some in celebration, others in reflection of what Kaizer Chiefs had once represented. But all understood that the balance had shifted, with Sundowns now firmly on top.
Following the burial ceremony, food service was provided by Sundowns players Ronwen Williams and Mothobi Mvala, who humbly served the attendees, further underlining the unity within the Sundowns camp.
As Pastor Manqoba concluded the service, the crowd united in saying:
“Rest in Peace, Kaizer Chiefs. Mamelodi Sundowns FC reigns supreme.”
This symbolic funeral may not mark the actual end of Kaizer Chiefs as a club, but it serves as a powerful metaphor for the dominance Mamelodi Sundowns has achieved. In the fiercely competitive world of South African football, one thing remains clear: the torch has been passed.
