Watford fare dodgers were ordered by a judge to pay more than £3,700.

Seven Watford fare dodgers were brought before the courts in recent months, and the magistrates ordered them to pay almost £3,700 to the train and bus companies.

The court records demonstrate how residents found guilty by magistrates acting in their absence have frequently been ordered to pay fines, prosecution expenses, and compensation totaling hundreds of pounds more than the original ticket price.

In one instance, a 32-year-old man was found guilty of not presenting a £1.75 ticket while on a Transport for London bus, and as a result, he was compelled to pay £559.75.

Richard Cerys

On February 26, Cerys Richards, of Rickmansworth Road, was accused of taking South Western Railways to London Waterloo without paying the £45.20 fare.

The 18-year-old was sentenced to pay a total of £533.20, including a £220 fine, before Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on September 18, after the matter was proven in her absence. She did not enter a plea.

Kadisha Jarret

On October 20, 2023, Kadisha Jarrett of Thorpe Crescent was allegedly at Wembley Central station without a valid ticket.

The 21-year-old was forced to pay £562.90, including a £220 fine, after being found guilty in absentia at Lavender Hill Magistrates’ Court on August 29.
Butler, Stevie Jean

On October 22, 2023, Stevie Jean Butler, of Estcourt Road, was charged for not producing a £1.75 ticket while riding a TFL bus in Brooks Hill Gate, Harrow.

The 32-year-old was ordered to pay £559.75, including a £220 fine, at Lavender Hill Magistrates’ Court on August 29 after the matter was proved in his absence.
Steran Lopba

Transport for London charged Steran Lopba, of Newhouse Crescent, of entering Gospel Oak station on March 9 without a valid ticket.

On August 1, Lavender Hill Magistrates’ Court found the 34-year-old guilty while he was not present, and they ordered him to pay £562.9, plus a £220 fine.

Balog Maros

On September 13, City Thameslink brought Cassio Road resident Maros Balog before Barkingside Magistrates’ Court, alleging that the 36-year-old had entered an area requiring a ticket without having a valid price.

He was ordered to pay £461.7, including a £220 fine, in the case that was brought in his absence using the paper-only single justice system.
Lewis Gent

On August 22, LNER transported Lewis Gent, of Rickmansworth Road, to Doncaster Justice Centre North.

The 32-year-old was charged with not turning in a valid ticket on May 20 while traveling between Grantham and Kings Cross.

In his absence, magistrates established the case and compelled Gent to pay £554.5, plus a £220 fine.

Gent was accused of travelling on an LNER train to Kings Cross without a ticket.

Liam Anthony Browne Liam Anthony Browne, of Grove Crescent in Croxley Green, was charged with travelling to Reading on April 23 on a Great Western Railway service without paying the £36.90 fare. The case was proved in his absence at Reading Magistrates’ Court and Family Court on August 9 and the 31-year-old was ordered to £524.90, of which there was a £220 fine.
