Reading FC legend on impact of takeover collapse on players

Reading legend Jem Karacan has warned supporters that all current players are now ‘in the shop window’ after Rob Couhig’s takeover collapsed last week.

Karacan played over 150 games for the Royals after breaking through the Academy and was a major member of the 2011/12 Championship-winning club.

Injuries derailed his career, and the former Turkish youth midfielder is now an agent.
Based in the North West, the 32-year-old spoke with BBC Radio Berkshire about Saturday’s 5-2 defeat against one of his previous teams, Bolton Wanderers, and the impact last week’s demoralising news will have on the squad.
“It’s probably going to get to a point where it really affects them,” he told me. “The job is to go out there and perform and keep those things away from you, but I think with what we’ve seen in the last couple of months and how things appear to be going, a lot of the players were looking forward to it being finished and moving on and getting their futures sorted, but they need to just knuckle down, play well, and go from there.

“As long as this goes on, they’re in the shop window. They need to be thinking about going out and putting on strong performances, which not only benefits them but also helps the club go up the league.”

Royals striker Sam Smith, who scored on Saturday at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, has previously stated that he was ‘unsettled’ during the summer transfer window, and the Royals were only able to sign one player, Chem Campbell, to replace Femi Azeez.
