Pundit tells Sunderland fans why they’ll love Aaron Connolly, and why opposition teams hate him.

Aaron Connolly, a striker who signed a contract with the Black Cats for the end of the season, is a risk that Sunderland has taken.

Sunderland signed former Brighton and Hull City striker Aaron Connolly on a free transfer, engaging in a rare bout of window shopping.

After spending a year at Hull City, the 24-year-old was let go, and he hasn’t had a club since the end of the previous campaign.

Connolly made just 13 starts and scored eight goals in 24 Championship games the previous season as injuries again plagued his career.

Connolly has a troubled past in addition to his inconsistent injury record; he has acknowledged in past interviews that he has been with the wrong crowd.

Journalist Michael Graham believes that Connolly’s professionalism will be his biggest challenge at the Stadium of Light this season.

But he remains a striker with a decent track record in the Championship, with strikers often lacking in the Sunderland first-team squad.

BBC pundit hails ‘irritant’ Aaron Connolly

Commentator Mike White from BBC Humberside offered his assessment of Connolly’s arrival to Wearside when speaking on Total Sport.

White, who saw Connolly play for most of the prior season, praised his innate ability to score goals. White thinks Connolly will succeed at Sunderland if he can maintain his health.

Additionally, White explained why Connolly might develop into a bit of a cult hero among supporters of the Black Cats.

“He irritates me,” he declared. And for the opposition, I mean that. He’s one of those players you love to have on your side. He winds you up beyond belief if he’s on the opposing side.

He’ll agitate the defenders, try to get under their skin, and maybe even have a quick conversation with them to wind them up.”

Regis Le Bris must find balance with Aaron Connolly at Sunderland

There is still a lot of youth and inexperience about Regis Le Bris. We’ve also seen that inexperience manifest itself on occasion this season.

Romaine Mundle’s response to challenges, particularly in the loss against Plymouth Argyle, has drawn criticism from Marco Gabbiadini.

Compared to most at Sunderland, Connolly is a little older and has more experience. Le Bris’s ability to control and contain his poor reactions will be crucial because of this.

Connolly needs to maintain his fitness. But as White notes, he’s a player that opponents will detest facing up to, and if he can establish himself right away at Sunderland, he’ll garner a lot of respect from the team.
