Over Land and Sea to… Brentford

Premier League, Gtech Community Stadium, Saturday 28 September 2024, 3pm BST

West Ham United will face Brentford in their sixth consecutive Premier League rivalry to begin the 2024/25 season.

The Bees’ smart 17,250-capacity Gtech Community Stadium, which opened in September 2020, initially hosted EFL Championship

fixtures without supporters due to the COVID pandemic, with Brentford playing a home game in front of fans for the first time on

December 5, 2020, when they drew 2-2 with Blackburn Rovers.

Brentford has since celebrated its historic promotion to the Premier League, finishing third in the Championship and defeating Swansea

City 2-0 in the 2021 Play-Off final.

Dane Thomas Frank has since helped establish the west Londoners in the top tier, finishing 13th with 46 points in 2021/22, ninth with a

record-breaking 59 points in 2022/23, and 16th with 39 points last season.

How to Get There…
Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium is often well serviced by public transportation, with several railway and Underground stations

within walking distance. However, a number of TfL services in the vicinity are now suspended, which limits your alternatives.

Kew Bridge, located in Zone 3 on the South Western Railway route connecting London Waterloo and Clapham Junction, is the nearest

mainline station.

The London Underground District line services between Turnham Green and Richmond, which usually serve Gunnersbury and Chiswick

Park, have been halted, as have London Overground services between South Acton and Richmond, therefore Gunnersbury station is also

unavailable.

The good news is that there are two more London Underground stations within a 20-minute walk: Acton Town (District and Piccadilly

lines) and South Ealing (Piccadilly line).

Further away, the Overground is suspended between Stratford and Camden Road, and the London Underground Metropolitan Line is

completely blocked on Saturday.

Where to stay…?
If you are going to the game from outside the capital or want to spend a night or two in west London, there are literally thousands of

hotels, guest houses, apartments, and other lodging options available around the city.

If you want to stay close to the stadium, Brentford has at least three well-known branded hotels, as well as a handful of independent

accommodations.

If you prefer somewhere more upscale, there are numerous excellent hotels and guesthouses over the Thames in Kew and Richmond.

What to Do…
London, of course, has attractions for all ages, budgets, and tastes.

While the capital’s biggest tourist attractions are well-known, we’ll focus on what to do in and around this specific neighborhood of west

London.

The Royal Botanic Gardens, located just across Kew Bridge on the south bank of the River Thames, is the most well-known destination,

having opened in 1759 and being designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., tickets are available in advance for £13.50 for adults and £5 for children aged 4 to 15. Inside, you may see

one of the world’s largest living plant collections, as well as a number of historic buildings such as the Temperate House, Palm House, and

Great Pagoda.

What happened there before?
West Ham United has suffered three Premier League defeats at the Gtech Community Stadium since our first visit in April 2022.

Former Brentford winger Saïd Benrahma scored two goals to secure a pre-season triumph in July 2021 and an FA Cup third-round

success in January 2023.

The Gtech is West Ham’s seventh Brentford home, having previously visited Shotters Field, Cross Roads, York Road, and Griffin Park,

which the Bees left in August 2020.

Our biggest ever away win at Brentford came in March 1953 at Griffin Park, when Irish striker Tommy Moroney and winger Harry Hooper

each scored twice in a 4-1 Second Division victory.
