Jamie Redknapp has delivered glowing praise on Enzo Maresca for his start to life at Chelsea.
There were many eyebrows raised in the summer when Chelsea appointed Enzo Maresca, giving him his first senior management role in the Premier League. It’s looking like a clever decision at this very early stage, though.
The Blues head coach has made a strong start at Stamford Bridge as his methods bleed into the players.
There’s no doubt that this is a talented Chelsea squad at his disposal, but we’ve seen in the past many top managers fail with the pressure and scrutiny in west London.
Maresca claims Chelsea must attack and defend better if they want to catch the best teams in this country. Ultimately, that’s got to be the aim for everyone at the club.
Jamie Redknapp impressed by Chelsea
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp really likes what he’s seeing from Chelsea this season under Maresca. In particular, he thinks that they’re looking extremely organised under the Italian boss.
When discussing Chelsea on Sky Sports Main Event (7:10pm, 25 September), Redknapp said: “They’ve got a lot of quality players. That’s never been the problem, they’ve got just so many of them. It’s starting to take shape. He’s (Maresca) coaching the team. They look very well organised. They are getting a little bit of belief and confidence.”
Blues tightening up defensively
It usually takes a good chunk of time for managers to get their ideas across to a new group of players, but there’s already signs that Chelsea are improving under Maresca.
The Blues were certainly looking defensively vulnerable in the opening weeks of the Premier League season, but they’ve just recorded back-to-back clean sheets in the top flight.
Here is a look at Chelsea’s results in the league so far…
Saturday 21st September
West Ham 0|3 Chelsea
Saturday 14th September
Bournemouth 0|1 Chelsea
Sunday 1st September
Chelsea 1|1 Crystal Palace
Sunday 25th August
Wolves 2|6 Chelsea
Sunday 18th August
Chelsea 0|2 Manchester City
Chelsea’s back four is starting to look more settled, while Robert Sanchez in goal is also finding a small purple patch of form. Speaking via talkSPORT last week, Danny Murphy praised the quality of Chelsea goalkeeper Sanchez.
It looks like Maresca’s side have so much attacking firepower in their ranks this season, so this could be a very successful season if the defence stands firm.
