In what ways did Celtic’s lack of ambition in recruiting the star help Aston Villa?

Since his older brother signed with Aston Villa, Stephen McGinn has disclosed how complacency may have contributed to Celtic’s unsuccessful attempt to sign John McGinn.

After making an impression at Hibs under Neil Lennon’s leadership in 2017, it seemed inevitable that the childhood Celtic fan would join Brendan Rodgers’ Double Treble winning team.

Stephen stated to Si Ferry & Co. in an interview with Open Goal that the family anticipated a move to be made and that only Celtic was interested in the talented midfield player.

“I recall thinking, ‘Surely they are going to pick him as a no-risk,’ as I watched the matches against Celtic.

Since only Celtic was actually present, that is essentially what we anticipated happening. I believe Celtic was also aware of that.

“I recall the agents stating that they would be entering if Villa managed to resolve the transfer embargo.”

Stephen McGinn seems to be implying that Celtic’s pursuit of John McGinn, who is currently the captain of Aston Villa, was complacent.

Hibernian’s reasonable asking price was not met by Celtic, allowing Villa to enter at the last minute. The player and Brendan were rumored to have met to talk about his role under the Irishman, and they were anticipating a deal to happen.

After sorting out their business, Steve Bruce’s Villa were able to submit a bid for the player. The bid was made swiftly, accepted, and McGinn traveled to Birmingham to finish his physical and sign with the Championship team.

Rodgers’ unhappiness was clear at Celtic Park on the night that Celtic drew with AEK Athens in the Champions League Qualifiers.

From Aston Villa’s perspective, John McGinn—who joined for a few million from Hibs—has proven to be the best deal of the century for the Villa Park team.

When the teams play on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at Villa Park in the Champions League, John McGinn will have the opportunity to play Celtic.

Both teams are past European Champions, with Celtic holding the unique title of being the first British team to win the European Cup in Lisbon on May 25, 1967.
