Lee Johnson, a former Sunderland manager, offered his opinions on the Black Cats’ inaugural season under Regis Le Bris.
Sunderland has improved greatly under Kyril Louis-Dreyfus’s leadership, emerging from League One and currently occupying the second spot in the Championship table.
The person in command of the Stadium of Light is Regis Le Bris. Although Lee Johnson was the first permanent manager of the Louis-Dreyfus period, he is the sixth.
When Louis-Dreyfus’ takeover was officially announced, Johnson was already in charge of Sunderland; throughout his 78 games in that role, the 43-year-old won 40 of them and also won the EFL Trophy in 2021.
Following his brief stints with Hibernian and Fleetwood Town, Johnson has since found employment elsewhere. He left Fleetwood in December of last year, and he was previously the manager of Bristol City.

In addition to receiving a ton of credit for their start under Le Bris, Sunderland are also receiving accolades for almost everything else.
Kristjaan Speakman is receiving accolades for his outstanding performance during the summer transfer window, and the club’s new Hummel uniforms are also receiving plaudits for changes made to the stadium.
When Johnson was asked about Sunderland’s chances of winning the Championship this season, he was speaking on 5 Live Sport’s 72+ podcast.
“Delighted that they’re doing well,” he remarked. Indeed, I feel like I’m on that trip. I’m not claiming to be the one at the top of the Championship.
“A fantastic start, which you often see with young squads,” Johnson continued. Maintaining that performance level during the winter will be their struggle, in my opinion.
“However, it appears that they possess agility.” It’s encouraging that they appear to have a distinct identity and playing style, especially since several of those guys have been together since League One.
“What you know about Sunderland is that it is incredibly powerful when it gains momentum.”
Under Regis Le Bris, Sunderland is gaining momentum.
Sunderland is back on track after their 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough last weekend; it seems like they never lost against Plymouth Argyle.
They appear to be confident of winning this weekend away at Watford now that the wind is back in their sails.
Thus, as Johnson points out, momentum may be extremely potent at a team with such strong fan base and high expectations.
However, Johnson also makes a valid point when he says that Sunderland’s biggest obstacle is the length of the season in general and the winter months in particular.
Recovering from a bad run of form could be difficult given the young age of the team and the large number of inexperienced players.
However, things are going great right now, and this weekend’s victory would really cement Sunderland’s status as a title contender.
