Famous Scottish road trip named favourite scenic driving route in UK

Scotland’s famous North Coast 500 tourism route has been crowned the best scenic driving route in the United Kingdom.

The route edged out travels in England’s Lake District and Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coastal Route for first place.

Europcar’s customer survey found that drivers’ top three scenic driving routes in the UK include the North Coast 500 in Scotland (39%), the Kendal to Keswick route in the Lake District (33.4%), and the Cat and Fiddle Buxton to Macclesfield route in the Peak District (25.9%). The Causeway Coastal Route in Northern Ireland ranked fourth (25.6%).

The North Coast 500, often known as Scotland’s Route 66, is a 500-mile circuit along Scotland’s north coast that includes mountain beauty, waterfalls, castles, and gorgeous beaches.

David Hughes, NC500 chair, stated, “We are overjoyed that the North Coast 500 has been named the drivers’ favourite scenic route in the Europcar study.

“This award recognises the North Highlands’ breathtaking beauty and unique charm, as well as the dedication of tourism businesses along the route to provide visitors with the best of Scottish Highlands.”

“This recognition inspires us to continue enhancing the journey for all who travel the NC500.”

In second position is the A591, a popular route of less than 30 miles from Kendal to Keswick in the Lake District that passes through some of the National Park’s most stunning vistas, including Lake Windermere and the lovely village of Grasmere.

The Cat and Fiddle route in the Peak District is named after a bar halfway along the road and ranks third. The pub is the second highest in the UK and is an excellent lunch stop on the day trip between Buxton and Macclesfield. Despite being so close to finishing in the top three, fourth place deserves special recognition.

How the routes compared

The Causeway Coastal Route is a 120-mile trip from Belfast to Londonderry that follows the stunning Atlantic coast and provides breathtaking views as well as access to the famed Giants Causeway.

Sarah Clarke, consumer marketing manager for Europcar Mobility Group UK, stated: “It’s easy to overlook the beautiful landscapes and scenery we have right here on our little islands in favour of more exotic places and iconic sites. Those planning a staycation, on the other hand, will not be disappointed if they visit any of these destinations on their next trip to the United Kingdom.

“Stops along the routes include fantastic local taverns, stunning caves, lovely beaches, and much more. And renting a car from Europcar relieves the stress of ensuring your own vehicle is fit for the journey while also avoiding adding to the mileage clock.”
