Alan Brazil took a swipe at Rangers on talkSPORT by joking that they’ll have just £80,000 to spend in the January transfer window.
Brazil took a jab at the club’s financial condition during a talkSPORT interview with Ally McCoist (26 September, 9:55am), stating that he had seen a newspaper piece revealing their meager transfer budget.
The Gers’ off-field struggles and ongoing boardroom battles have raised concerns about their long-term spending capability, although Celtic’s finances are improving [Tom English, 24 September].
Brazil told McCoist, “Big bit in the paper today – they reckon you’ll have £80,000 to spend in January!”
Rangers finances are no laughing matter for Philippe Clement
The Ibrox administration will undoubtedly be able to find more than £80,000 for Clement to spend in the upcoming transfer window, but the Belgian is unlikely to earn millions upon millions.
Clement oversaw a much-needed makeover of the Gers roster this summer, releasing numerous veteran players and adding 11 new players, many of whom were on loan or free transfers.
Mohamed Diomande, Hamza Igamane, Robin Propper, and Nedim Bajrami were the only players on whom the club paid seven figures, with a further £4 million committed to making Oscar Cortes’ loan permanent [Daily Record, June 4].
Despite these expenditures, the policy near the conclusion of the transfer window looked to be ‘one in, one out’, with Bajrami’s Deadline Day arrival arriving only after Todd Cantwell left for Blackburn.
It remains to be seen how much support Clement will be able to muster from a boardroom that is now in disarray, but the Belgian will not be holding his breath unless significant changes occur upstairs.
