Plymouth Argyle battled Championship leaders West Bromwich Albion all the way before falling 1-0 at The Hawthorns.

Wayne Rooney’s Pilgrims suffered their third defeat in six league games, dropping to 20th place in the table, but there were plenty of positive indications from their determined and disciplined effort.

In-form West Brom striker Josh Maja struck the game-winner in the 62nd minute, after the home side had three efforts hit the post in the first half, while Morgan Whittaker had two wonderful chances for the Pilgrims.

Maja scored his sixth goal of the season from close range after midfielder Uros Racic crossed from the right, and Argyle, although getting into some excellent offensive situations, were unable to recover.

They must now prepare for a Sky-televised match against former Premier League team Luton Town at Home Park next Friday night.

Match statistics

Argyle had more possession (51% to 49%). They attempted 17 goals, four of which were on target, seven were off aim, and six were blocked.

West Brom also had 17 goal attempts, four of which were on target. Five shots were blocked, while three were off target (three hitting the post). Albion led 4-3 on corners.

Those data, I believe, indicate that this was a very level match, with West Brom’s superior talent up front being the major difference between the teams.

Full-time: West Brom 1, Argyle 0.

Josh Maja scores the game-winning goal in the 62nd minute. Argyle suffered a defeat against the Championship leaders, but their performance showed some promise.
