Regis Le Bris has provided an injury update on Sunderland’s summer acquisition Ian Poveda.

Sunderland has had a strong start to the 2024/25 season, with five victories in their first six games under new manager Regis Le Bris. They are now dominating the league standings.

There was a lot of concern about this next season, especially in terms of attacking, because Sunderland was so lackluster and without confidence in front of goal previous season, scoring only 52 goals in the 2023/24 season.

Despite Jack Clarke’s transfer to Ipswich Town, the Black Cats have excelled in attack, scoring 13 goals in their first six games, surpassing any other Championship club.

Le Bris has good offensive alternatives, with Roumaine Mundle and Patrick Roberts showing promising promise. The return of one Sunderland attacking gem is expected to increase his possibilities even further.

Regis Le Bris reveals Sunderland forward Ian Poveda is nearing his comeback.

Sunderland recruited Ian Poveda from Sheffield Wednesday, where he was on loan for half of the previous season.

The attacker comes with fitness worries, having played just 17 minutes in the Championship season and missing the previous two games.

When asked about Poveda’s availability, Le Bris told the Sunderland Echo, “I think he will be available for our next training sessions, yes.”

Le Bris has already stated that Poveda will be eased back into action if he is healthy and ready.

Sunderland supporters must be patient as Ian Poveda nears his homecoming.

As evidenced by his brief stint at Sheffield Wednesday and brief appearances with Leeds United, the Colombian winger will undoubtedly add an extra dimension to the team’s attacking capabilities, filling Mundle’s role as an alternative player capable of trickery and flair.

He is an exciting player to have in and around the squad, and once he is fully healthy and ready to play, he will undoubtedly become an important part of Le Bris’ strategy.

However, the length of time it has taken to bring him near to game time has made it evident that hurrying him back to action would not be a prudent option, nor would Sunderland supporters expect Poveda to be at his best too quickly, given that he has not started a Championship game in five and a half months.

Although he is a promising player, his injury history suggests that he may need some time to fully integrate into the club.
