Heung-min Son reveals Bentancur’s reaction to racial incident – ‘He was almost crying’

Son and Bentacur

Over the summer, Rodrigo Bentancur made an alleged joke that carried racial undertones towards his teammate, Heung-min Son. Now, the latter has explained exactly what the fallout of that situation was between the pair.

Son has a lot of love for Bentancur

Earlier this year, during an international break, Bentancur participated in a media interview in his home Uruguay and made a poor joke about how Heung-min Son and his South Korean teammates looked alike.

Football fans were offended by the comment, and although the club handled the situation internally, Bentancur is now facing charges from the FA for his behavior, which could result in a 12-week penalty (ESPN).

Speaking with the media about this subject today (via Football.London), Son disclosed his current thoughts on the subject as well as how he and Bentancur responded to the circumstances at the time.

He declared, “I adore Rodrigo.” I cherish him. We had many happy memories together. He immediately apologized after realizing. I was on vacation and had no idea what had transpired. He texted me for a long while, and it was clear that he was sincere.

“He then saw me at training and he was almost crying. He felt really sorry. We’re all human and we make mistakes. I love Rodrigo and we move on together as a brother. We just have to wait for the FA’s process and that’s all I can say.”

Postecoglou has his say on the matter

Son has been very clear in the past that he received and accepted Bentancur’s apology, and even shared a message of support on social media at the time.

Spurs boss, Ange Postecoglou has also discussed the situation previously, telling Football.London that Bentancur was well aware of the ‘ramifications’ of his actions and that they would wait for the FA’s decision.

A decision will be made soon

Bentancur was given until September 19 to address the alleged Rule E3 violation, and the outcome of his accusation should be known shortly.

Should his suspension be extended to a maximum of 12 weeks, he will probably miss most of the Europa League’s league stage, any more Carabao Cup matches Spurs advance to, and maybe ten Premier League games as well.
